Doctor Who Season 8 to explain Capaldi’s “Fires of Pompeii” Episode

With the much-anticipated Season 8 of Doctor Who coming up in August, rumors have started to crop up. What else would we expect of what has now basically become a cult following?

As some may know, the Doctor Who cast is currently filming on the Spanish island of Lanzarote. When the filming location was first released, Steven Moffat (the show’s writer), had said that “The Doctor is returning to the scene of an old adventure – but there have been sinister changes since his last visit.”

Originally, the speculation was that the ‘old adventure’ was the Fifth Doctor’s adventure “Planet of Fire” (1984), which was filmed on the same location. Taking into consideration a few more factors, however, make it seem like the ‘old adventure’ may actually be Peter Capaldi’s Doctor Who debut, “The Fires of Pompeii.”

Peter Capaldi, who was cast as the 12th Doctor (or 13th, if you count John Hurt’s Doctor), originally played a character named Caecilius, who was a citizen of Pompeii on ‘Volcano Day’ during the 10th Doctor’s run. The current theory says that Capaldi may actually return to Pompeii to explain the actor’s preceding role in the show. Crazy rumor? Maybe. If you don’t believe, here’s a quote from Steven Moffat from an interview with Nerd Cubed:

We are aware that Peter Capaldi’s played a part in Doctor Who before and we’re not going to ignore the fact.

I remember Russell told me he had a big old plan as to why there were two Peter Capaldis in the Who universe, one in Pompeii and one in Torchwood.

When I cast Peter, [Russell] got in touch to say how pleased he was, I said ‘Okay, what was your theory and does it still work?’ and he said ‘Yes it does, here it is’…

It’s actually quite neat.
